Story of the Global Seed Vault
Torstai 23.12.2010 11:18In the spirit of the season, and as a positive comment to my previous blog/Story of Nuclear Waste Repository , I want to share information about The Svalbard Global Seed Vault, ”Huippuvuorten siemenholvi eli Tuomiopäivän holvi”, that I was made aware of by a student after an interesting lunch talk about the nuclear waste repositories.
”The Svalbard Global Seed Vault turned one on Feb. 26, an anniversary it celebrated by receiving 90,000 new samples, or four tons, of seeds. Those are in addition to the more than 400,000 unique seed samples (more than 200 million individual seeds) that have been transferred to Svalbard since the $9 million facility opened last year.” -Bryan Walsh: The Planet’s Ultimate Backup Plan: Svalbard in Time, 27 Feb 2009
I’m so happy that we have also this delightful testament to leave for the future generations. Another story all together about us and our times…
Wonderful greetings of the season to All!
